Move The Class: Bring the power of poetic expression to your school community.
SPOKEN WORD PEDAGOGY
The Spoken Word workshop uses a student-centered approach to create an interactive, multi-modal, engaging educational environment. Through a democratized canon, students are exposed to culturally-relevant literature. By using these Mentor Texts, young people practice using literary devices and develop their writing and performance skills. Within longer-term workshop residencies, young people develop their critical reading, thinking, and writing skills, as they develop literary identities.
Studies report that arts integration approaches are successful in: “producing better attendance and fewer discipline problems, increased graduation rates, and improved test scores; motivating students who were difficult to reach otherwise; and providing challenges to more academically successful students.”
Fiske, E. (Ed.). (1999). Champions of change: the impact of the arts on learning. Washington, DC: The Arts Education Partnership and the President’s Committee on Arts and Humanities
PROCESS
Choose between 3 options: Guest Speaker/Performer for 1-day, Performance Poetry Intensive for 1-2 weeks, or an In-School Residency for 8-10 weeks. Each option involves a performance, exposure to classic texts, and a workshop where students write and perform original poems.
